ALEX KATZ

Thin brushstrokes that barely feel the texture and light but warm colors get people’s attention.

He draws just two things. People and landscape. His brushstroke is bold because he has drawn every day for a long time. He started real working on painting after graduating university in 1960s, when was the time of the golden age of ‘New things’

As it is called ‘the era of peace and wealth’ there were various and new genres filled up American art.

Many artists stood out such as Jackson Pollock(he was widely noticed for his technique “action painting”), Mark Rothko(he is best known for his color-field abstract), Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein(they were leading figures of pop art), etc.

Alex katz, the young artist, kept stance to draw what he saw on his canvas while fine painting was considered outdated and old-fashioned.

The main character of his paintings is his wife, Ada Katz, has been a subject of over 250 portraits from the late of 1950s.

There is no a detailed description and technical skill. Alex’s paintings make us feel classy and natural beauty since he draws what he sees and interacts with essential technique.

텍스쳐가 거의 느껴지지 않는 얇은 붓질과 경쾌하면서도 따뜻한 색이 시선을 사로 잡는다.

그가 그리는 대상은 단 두 가지. 사람과 풍경이다. 그의 붓 질에는 거침이 없다. 긴 시간 매일 꾸준히 그려온 까닭이다. 카츠가 대학을 졸업하고 본격적으로 작업 전선에 뛰어들었던 60년대는 그야말로 ‘새로운 것들’의 전성시대였다.

액션 페인팅 기법을 사용한 추상 회화로 이름을 널리 알린 잭슨 폴록과 색면 추상의 마크 로스코 부터 팝 아트의 대표주자 격인 앤디 워홀과 로이 리히텐슈타인 등 평화와 부의 시대라는 명칭에 버금갈 만큼 다양한 새로운 장르들이 미국 미술계를 가득 채우던 때였다. 순수 회화는 낡고 고루한 것으로 받아들이던 그 속에서 젊은 작가 알렉스 카츠는 올곧이 직접 ‘본 것’ 만을 묵묵히 캔버스에 담아왔다.

그의 그림에 가장 많이 등장하는 인물은 단연 그의 아내 에이다Ada이다. 50년대 후반부터 지금까지 그가 그린 아내 에이다만 250여점이 넘는다. 많은 묘사를 하지 않고 오히려 기교를 걷어낸 카츠의 그림이 세련되고 자연스럽게 느껴지는 것은 ‘직접 보고, 직접 교감’ 한 것을 더함 없이 그리기 때문일 것이다.
